Today, we are talking about wood home maintenance, and more specifically, how Timber Block’s homes compare to a traditional built wood home, or a conventional log home.

First, the home maintenance of a Timber Block is considerably less than most traditional wood homes. Let’s start with settling:

Settling: Typically, a traditionally built log home will settle. There’s no real way to get around that. To prepare for settling, the builder will have to leave room to allow the home to settle. One of the reasons why settling happens is due to the high moisture of a full log home. The wood Timber Block uses is dried to an 8-10 percent moisture content – that’s furniture grade – moisture will not be a problem with a Timber Block home.

Checking: A traditional log home will check (the cracks you see in the logs.) If this isn’t taken care of, you will have problems with moisture, and pests. Those with a traditionally built log home will prevent this from happening by chinking. Chinking can be time consuming and expensive. In addition, some people don’t really like the “look” of chinking. As with settling, Timber Block homes will never check – you will never have to “chink” your Timber Block home.

Pests: If you haven’t caulked or chinked, pests can be a major issue for a traditional log home. Beetles, bees and termites can cause some problems if not treated. Again, something you won’t have to worry about with a Timber Block home.

Staining: As far as wood home maintenance, this is something you will have to do. You’re building with wood, you love the look, feel and beauty of wood – and wood needs to be protected. You will have to stain your wood home. Timber Block’s panels come pre-stained. Talk with a Timber Block to get their recommendations on how often you will have to stain.

Timber Block is proud to be able to reassure you, you will not be facing a long list of home maintenance procedures, but rather be able to enjoy your wood home, and avoid paying the high price of maintaining a traditional wood home!
