It’s a brand new year. For many people, 2014 is the year they’ve decided to build their dream log home. Or, at least get started on some firm plans!

So, how do you get started on getting that plan in place?

There are many things that need to be done. First, will be your research. You want to know exactly what your log home will look like. Is it a smaller, second home cottage? Or do you plan on this new home to be your primary residence?

At Timber Block, we offer stock plans to give you an idea on the “look” of your new home, with dozens of floor plans in four different series. However, we can modify any of those plans to create the exact home you want. Also, we can build a complete custom design as well. Therefore, we can build a 500 square foot log home to a 10,000 plus log home! The options are endless!

You will also have to decide on not just the exterior look and square footage of your home, but the interior as well. Do you want two, three, four, or five bedrooms? Do you want your master on the main floor? Will you have a loft? Will you build a basement? Or will it sit on a slab? Do you want a loft? Outdoor living space? Garage? Detached or attached? Do you love an open concept, or do you love a design with more prominent rooms?

So, you likely have an idea of what you want it to look like, and the best way to come up with your perfect plan is to surf the internet, look at photos, call up one of our pros, attend a log home show, join us on one of our webinars, visit one of our many model homes, see us at a wall raising, and so on.

Land is obviously something you have to look at too. Do you want to build it with trees surrounding it? The ocean? Lake? Mountains?

Talking to a reputable builder will also help with choosing land (or us! We have many pros that can help you with choosing land).

And financing – that’s always something to discuss (and also, something we can help with)!
