We absolutely love following the construction progress of a Timber Block home straight from our homeowners. The Williamsons are in the process of completing their Timber Block home – and they have given us an excellent step by step description of their experience…

Sean and Gabrielle Williamson as well as their 12 year old daughter Amanda are getting very close to the completion of their beautiful, customized Timber Block Dakota Model.

After losing their cottage to a fire last year, the Williamson’s decided to go ahead and rebuild on their land. (in the Laurentians, north of Montreal, Quebec). After driving by Timber Block’s model homes near Montreal, they knew they were looking at what will soon be the company to build their new dream log home.

The Williamson’s did do their research though…

“The R-30 rating was a big factor in our decision, the ease of erection and the ability to customize the interior to our taste finalized the deal. Also the fact that it is an ‘engineered’ log home and does not need the maintenance that a traditional log home requires was important. My wife refused to entertain the idea of a ‘log cabin’. We will be using a lot of drywall finishes on partition walls and ceilings to give it a contemporary feel. The final price was lower than we had expected or assumed as well. Very good value in our opinion.”

The Williamson’s chose to go with a Dakota model, but made a few changes…

“We modified bedroom#3 with a shed dormer to maximize the space in that room. We got the idea by researching online and when I happened across the Boomgarden’s website (Michael Boomgarden of Timber Block Wisconsin…click here to go to www.timberblockwisconsin.com) I could clearly see what we needed to do. We also increased the size of the main floor bathroom/laundry to make it more functional in our opinion.”

The home sits on a slope, so our basement will be walk out. We went with an insulated foundation system and we also have 9′ ceilings in the basement. Since the basement is a walkout it will definitely not feel like a ‘basement’ and will host a family room where we plan to watch TV, 2 more bedrooms, a full bathroom, a workshop and the mechanical room. This will turn our Dakota into a 5 bedroom home which is important to us. Since it is a cottage/chalet we frequently have guests up and the ability to sleep large numbers of people is very important”.

The Williamson’s are now in the process of putting the finishing touches on the exterior this week. They chose a metal roof, which will be completed in the next couple of weeks. The HVAC and roughing in is finished, and the electrician is in the process of finishing his work. The partitian walls and floors will be installed in the next week as well.

Keep posted to this blog, as the Williamson’s share their Timber Block experience! Congratulations on your new home Sean, Gabrielle and Amanda!
