You will hear us talk a lot about the fact our homes have R-30 insulation in the walls. And most people likely know when you have a home with that high of an R-Value it means it’s highly energy efficient.
But what does that really mean for the home owner?
It’s quite simple. “R” values are very important when building a home. Not only will high R Values greatly reduce your energy efficiency (in both hot and cold climates) but because of building codes, R values are actually mandatory. So, not only do R values help you save money, but will also maintain the value of your home.
Timber Block homes are R-30 in the walls, and up to R-50 in the roof.
How are R values calculated?
On average, the calculation will be around 1.25 inch of wood per “R”. (depending on the wood, it may vary slightly) For example, with pine, you will get 1.35 inch per “R”. So, if you take a 6 inch log, and multiply that by 1.35, your end result with be R-8. (square log)
With Timber Block, we are able to achieve R-30 because the inside of our log is insulated (high density polyurethane) This is why we are certainly gaining plenty of awareness and gathering a lot of attention in the log home world because many people who love the look of a log home, they are concerned with how energy efficient their home will be. A Timber Block home is the best of both worlds – it is a beautiful log home, but highly energy efficient!
How does this all translate into actual cash savings?
We have literally seen actual bills from Timber Block customers. For example, one home owner’s heating bill went from hundreds of dollars a month (in a very cold Canadian winter in northern Quebec), to down to $70 dollars per month in their Timber Block home. Count that up, and over the years, the savings are in the thousands!
Thermal envelope – why is this important?
Thermal envelope refers to the thermal insulation within the building enclosure. The purpose of envelope insulation is to provide a continuous thermal barrier to minimize heat flow through the walls, ceiling and floor. The R-30 insulation keeps your home comfortable and reduces costs for heating and cooling. Without a quality level of insulation, your home will not be as comfortable and energy costs will be increased if sufficient insulation is not installed and installed correctly. Timber Block’s proprietary process ensures the insulation is consistent and maintained throughout the entire height of the log and wall structure. In typical home insulation methods, such as fiberglass batt, the insulation could become compressed or installed with gaps resulting in a loss of energy efficiency.
